Virginia "Donie" Obituary (1927 - 2012)

Virginia L. "Donie" Henry Askins, of Cambridge, transitioned to immortality peacefully on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital. Born July 8, 1927, the second child of the late Edgar Washington and Ada P. Henry, attended the public schools of Dorchester County. She was well known as an artistic hair designer, fashion designer and for her athletic ability, but most of all her exuberant personality, her loving and caring spirit. She was a seasonal worker and was employed by Phillips Packing Company, Rob Roy Company and Airpax. At the age of 26, she committed her life to Christ at Union Chapel AME Church Cordtown. She served in various capacities within the church such as, Class Leader, Steward, Usher, Sunrise Singers, Fifty Voices and the Union Chapel Mass Choir. "Mother", as she has been called by many, had a heart of love and really loved her family. Sharing and giving to others was one of her basic rules. Her presence was like a ray of sunshine, as she would light up a room with her loving spirit. She was an excellent confidant, a good listener and was always very family oriented. Her life was spent as a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and true friend. She spent her leisure time traveling, reading magazines and books, cooking (was known as the best oyster fritter cook), a good dancer, "fashionista", singing, interior designing, yard sales and shopping. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Christopher "Jackie" Henry, three sisters, Peggy Chase, Vermon Stanley and Shirley Henry, a brother, Fleetwood Henry, a son in-law, Donald R. Wongus and two nephews, Edward Henry and Lorenzo Henry. Her memory will be cherished by her children, Garnell "Bommer" Henry (Brenda), Shirley H. Hollis and Rolanda "Diane" H. Wongus, Ava Vanessa Henry, Harvey "Moose" Molock (Phyllis), Doris Wilson and Linna Manokey; 15 grandchildren, Dwayne Henry , Jamal Henry, Nicole Henry, Nisha Henry, Shaquinda Demby, Garnell Henry II, Dontae Henry, Rashad Hollis, Chloe Bilal, Donald R. Wongus II, Shayla R. Johnson, Thomas Melton, Tamara Melton, Phyllis J. Melton and Lisa Ann Melton; 23 great grandchildren, Jayla Henry, Bronx Henry, Teosha Henry, Deosha Henry, Christopher Goodwin, Isis Goodwin, Gabrielle Henry, Garnell Henry III, Dashara Hollis, Jordan Wongus, Jihan Bilal, Jakari Johnson, Da'Kai Bryant, Thomas Melton Jr., Briana Melton, Elicia Friedman, Migdalia Place, Victor Santos, Louis Santos, Jasmaine Santos, Victoria Santos, Robert Melton and Noah Blahyj; a sister, Ethel Wells (Lovie); three brothers, Lorenzo Henry (Lue), Franklin Henry (Janet) and Leon Henry (Joyce); a daughter in-law, Virginia C. Henry; a goddaughter, Sarah Opher "Doll Baby"; nieces, nephews, special cousins, Valerie Dean and Eunice Wheatley; special friends, Courtney Johnson, Edna Mae Molock, Gladys Cornish and Twilla Mae Murray and a host of other cousins and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 11am at Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church 425 High St. Cambridge, MD with a viewing Friday evening from 6-8p.m at Henry Funeral Home P.A 510 Washington St. Cambridge Maryland. Interment in Cordtown Cemetery
