Valerie Askins Woods, 94 passed away Monday, July 18, 2016 at the Harrison Senior Living Nursing Home in Georgetown, DE.\n \n\n Mrs. Woods was born in Cambridge, MD on February 9, 1922 to Albert Askins and Alice Bromwell Askins, who are both are deceased. She was the fourth child of a family of 13 children.\n \n\n She was educated in the public school system of Dorchester County. During her early life, she was employed by Phillips Packing Company in Cambridge, MD. In 1952, Valerie moved to Wilmington, DE, where she was employed as a domestic worker.\n \n\n As a young adult, she received her religious training at Bethel A. M. E. Church in Cambridge, MD.\n \n\n In 1946, Valerie married Eddie Woods and joined Zion Baptist Church. After their marriage, she was baptized by the pastor, Rev. Lewis Bayneum, while fellowshipping there.\n \n\n After moving to Wilmington, DE, she joined Central Baptist Church in 1955. She enjoyed many years of working with the dedicated members of Central Baptist Church. As a member of Central Baptist Church, she enjoyed being involved in and serving as church clerk, usher, secretary for the Pastor, assistant secretary and vice-president of Pastor’s Aid, assistant secretary for the Florence L. Carrington Missionary Circle, secretary for the trustees, secretary for the Building Fund and as teacher for Vacation Bible School. She loved working on committees for special programs such as Women’s Day.\n \n\n Valerie made many friends while living in Wilmington. Two special people who became an important part of her life were Ms. Elizetta Waters, who was like a daughter to her and Ms. Water’s son, Chris Waters, who became Valerie’s godson.\n \n\n Family and friends remaining to cherish Valerie’s memories are her brother, Leon(Annie) Askins, sisters, Savannah Askins, Daphine(Curtis) Mitchell, devoted nephew and care giver, Isaac Downs, III and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.\n \n\n In addition to her parents and her husband, brothers, George Askins and Clifton Askins, sisters, Ella Mae Downs, Eva Burton and Marzella Elliott preceded her in death.\n \n\n Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11am at New Life Christian Church and Ministries, 923 Phillips Street, Cambridge, with a viewing Friday, July 22, 6-7 pm at Henry Funeral Home and one hour prior to service on Saturday at the church.
