Ruben Hooper, 91, departed this life on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge, Maryland.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n Ruben was born on January 22, 1923 in Crapo, Maryland to Albanus Hooper, Sr. and Sarah E. Elliott Hooper. He received his education from the public school system of Dorchester County. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 395\n \n\n th\n \n\n Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion where he was stationed in New Guinea. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1946 and returned to Cambridge.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n On November 16, 1947, he was joined in marriage to Anna Elizabeth Chester to whom he was married for 66 years.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n Ruben was a member of Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church and the Cedar Meadows Rod and Gun Club. In 1961, he and his wife became two of the initial group of African Americans to integrate the State Government of Maryland when they accepted employment at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center in Cambridge, MD. He remained employed there for 24 years. After retiring, he continued to enjoy his hobbies of hunting, bowling, and playing pool.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n He was preceded in death by his parents Albanus and Sarah, sister Ruth Henson; brothers Monroe Elliott and Wilbert Ennals; brother-in-laws Benjamin Chester, Winny Henson, Elwood Kennedy and Robert Williams; and sister-in-laws Nancy Chester and Florence Elliott.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n Ruben leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories his devoted wife Elizabeth; daughter Marilyn Benaderet (fiancé Gregory) of Baltimore, MD; grandson Ruben Miles of Baltimore, MD; brothers Albanus Hooper, Jr. (Dorothy) of Cambridge and Rommie Hooper of Upper Marlboro, MD; sisters Erma Gibson (Donald) of Bowie, MD; Bertie Woods (Alfred) of Front Royal, VA; Ramona Kennedy of Cambridge; and Elva Hooper (Dorsey) of Bowie, MD; sister-in-law Frances Williams of Cambridge; Godchildren Dr. Bronte Jones of Boiling Springs, PA and Byron Chester of Hyattsville, MD; a niece, who assisted in his care, Vanessa Saunders of Cambridge, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n Interment will follow at Zoar Cemetery, in Beckwith near Cambridge.
