Rev. Enez Grubb Obituary (2018) - Cambridge, Maryland

Rev. Enez Lincolna Stafford Grubb, 75 departed this life on Saturday March 10, 2018 at Chesapeake Woods Nursing Home in Cambridge, Maryland. She was born on December 18, 1942 in Cambridge. Rev. Grubb was the daughter of the late Emerson Stafford and Sarah Stafford. She was the baby of three children. As a young girl she knew that she was called to preach. Enez often held impromptu sermons on the back of a flat bed truck. Her congregation at the time was comprised of all her playmates from the beloved “South Pine Street” community. Rev. Grubb was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. She attended the Pine Street Elementary School, St. Clair Elementary School and cherished her childhood memories growing up down on “South Pine.” Rev. Grubb was an accomplished musician and started playing the piano for several churches throughout the community beginning at the age of 12. Rev. Grubb spent more than six decades of her life as a highly respected public servant, serving the citizens of Dorchester County, Maryland. She was a pioneer in the Civil Rights movement in Cambridge. She was part of a small but dedicated nucleus of local residents who were willing to dedicate their time and resources to the community. At the age of 19, Rev. Grubb and Fred St. Clair were the co-chairs of the Cambridge Non-Violent Action Committee, and the local SNCC affiliate, which subsequently, was later headed by Gloria Richardson. During this time, Rev. Grubb participated in numerous marches in downtown Cambridge and was jailed on several occasions. She was instrumental in integrating the City of Cambridge Rescue Fire Department and the Cambridge Arena Pool by challenging the racial discriminatory policies upheld by both institutions. Rev. Grubb credited her parents, Emerson and Sarah Stafford, for helping her develop an appreciation for education, history, and teaching her the responsibility of taking a productive role in the community. She served as Vice President of the Harriet Tubman Coalition, member of the Good Shephard Society (Association), Cambridge Housing Review Board and Director of Sojourner-Douglass College – Cambridge Campus. Rev. Grubb was a graduate of Mace’s Lane High School Class of 1960 and in 1985 went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work from Sojourner-Douglass College, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She served as an educator teaching at her Alma Mater Mace’s Lane High School. Rev. Grubb also followed in a long family tradition and proudly served our country for 16 years in the United States Army Reserves. She was employed at the State Hospital in Cambridge, Maryland for 22 years and in 1996 she retired from the Department of Parole and Probation as a Senior Agent. Rev. Enez Grubb dedicated her life to Christ at an early age. She was a life-long member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1991 she was ordained as Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and served as an Associate Pastor at Union Chapel AME Church in Cordtown, Maryland. In 1993 she was assigned to pastor at Mt. Olive AME Church in Fruitland, Maryland. Before falling ill Rev. Grubb served as the Associate Pastor at Bethel AME Church in Easton, Maryland, pastored by Reverend Wendall Gary. Enez always remained supportive of her home church in Cambridge, Maryland pastored by Reverend Randolph Fitchett. Rev. Grubb remained actively involved in politics and participated in the campaigns of the first African American Mayor in Cambridge, Victoria Jackson-Stanley and the election/re-election campaign of President Barak Obama. Enez loved her community, loved her family, loved her church and truly loved God. Besides her parents, Rev. Grubb was preceded in death by her brother Robin H.G. Askins, her sister Olivia “Patsy” Pittman, and her step-mother Elaine Stafford. Rev. Grubb leaves to cherish her memory to four children: Roberta “Bobbie” Grubb, Robin Lamont Goodson (Lesia), Ronae Enez Grubb, and Yogananda Pittman-McKinney (Leroy); a sister, Irene “Poochie” Evans; two nephews: Don R. Pittman and Robin Johnson; two nieces: Monica Powell and Robyn King; seven grandchildren: Latoya Robinson-Seay (Julius), Ayanna Coley, Breion Goodson, Nnamdi Jahmai Chandler, Joshua Goodson, Satchel McKinney, Seth McKinney; two great grandchildren: Jordyn Oliver and Jaden Seay; shared a special bond with her cousin, Derek Griffin who she loved as her brother; a loyal cousin Darlene Sterling, and a host of other relatives and friends.
