Nathan Thompson, Sr.

–

Cambridge, Maryland

Nathan Thompson, Sr., 93, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton. He was born on August 6, 1932, in Dorchester County, Maryland, the son of the late Francis H. Thompson and Agnes Pinder Thompson.

Nathan was educated in the Dorchester County Public School system and graduated from Mace’s Lane High School in 1952. His classmates affectionately called him “Boomy.” After graduation, he worked locally before proudly accepting a draft notice for the United States Army in 1955. He served in the 373rd Armored Infantry Battalion, part of the Armored Division, and earned the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity. After eight years of honorable service, including time stationed in Europe during the post–World War II occupation period, Nathan received an honorable discharge in recognition of his faithful service.

Following his military career, Nathan built a meaningful life through hard work and dedication. He began working on farms and in industrial labor before moving into logistics, including employment with a seafood clam chip company. He later joined Airpax Corporation as a shipping clerk, where he was respected for his diligence and reliability until his retirement. Nathan was a devoted fan of the Baltimore Orioles and loved relaxing with his favorite television programs, especially Family Feud with Steve Harvey and courtroom shows like Judge Judy.

More than anything, Nathan’s heart belonged to music. Gifted with extraordinary natural talent, he played the piano and organ beautifully and could even play multiple keyboards at once. Gospel music held a special place in his soul, and he shared this gift with many congregations, including Airey’s Church, Christ Rock, Bethel AME, and numerous others. He served faithfully for many years as the musician at St. Luke UMC, joyfully offering his music in praise until his health no longer allowed him to do so. He accompanied countless choirs and gospel groups, including The Wallace Singers, a family group made up of his wife Mary and her siblings. He also played piano for a small family-based gospel group that consisted of his sister-in-law, Ester Martin, a gifted soloist who ministered at churches throughout the region, and his two sons, Vaughn, on drums, and Brent, on guitar.

Nathan’s love for music lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, many of whom inherited his God-given musical gift. Just as his melodies once filled sanctuaries, his spirit now echoes through their songs. His faith was established early in life as he worshipped at Airey’s and Fork Neck churches in Cambridge, remaining steadfast in his devotion until his health began to decline. One of his favorite hymns was “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, and the scripture he often reflected on was Psalm 100:1–2: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” This verse beautifully reflects how he lived—making music for God and bringing joy to others through song.
In 1960, Nathan married the love of his life, Mary G. Wallace Thompson. Their union was blessed with five children: Nathan Thompson Jr., Vaughn Thompson, Bruce Thompson, Brent Thompson, and Tina Thompson.

Nathan was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary G. Thompson; three sons, Nathan Thompson Jr., Vaughn Roscoe Thompson, and Bruce Michael Thompson; two sisters, Lillian Thompson and Agnes Thompson; and three brothers, Francis Thompson, Wallace Thompson, and Norvel Thompson Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Russell E. Hawkins of Egg Harbor, NJ, and Brent L. Thompson Sr. of Salisbury, MD; two daughters, Naomi A. Wallace of Easton, MD, and Tina M. Thompson of Cambridge, MD; a daughter-in-law, Michaela “Meggie” Thompson of Brookhaven, MS; two sisters-in-law, Ruth E. (Herbert) Elliott and Normalee Thompson, both of Cambridge, MD; a beloved grandson, Jeffery D. Thompson, who he and Mary helped raise as their own; 13 adored grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Norvel B. Thompson Jr., who was like a son, being both Mary’s nephew (through her sister Edith) and Nathan’s nephew (through his brother Norvel); a special family friend and fellow military veteran, Gerald Johnson, whose visits and friendship over the years meant so much. Nathan also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives, along with many dear friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and music.

Nathan Thompson Sr. was a man of faith, family, music, and quiet strength. His life was a song of service, devotion, and love—a melody that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
