Nillian Ezibetha Saunders was born June 9, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia, the fourth of six children born to Maggie and Willie Saunders. At an early age, Nillian was renamed and lived her entire life as Mildred. She was the last surviving sibling.\n \n\n She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Norfolk, leaving during the sixth grade to care for her ailing mother. After her mother’s passing one year later, Mildred moved to Cambridge, Maryland where she lived with her older sister Hattie and would make her adult life until moving into Assisted Living close to her sons and their families on the Western Shore.\n \n\n Mildred worked at Phillips Cannery in Cambridge, where she met her future husband Russell P. Stewart. After marrying in 1952, they began raising sons Russell Jr. and Eugene. Their third son, Gregory was born in 1955.\n \n\n Mildred worked for twenty years at Phillips and Bumble Bee Tuna. After leaving Bumble Bee Tuna, Mildred ran a small daycare center in their home and newspaper delivery for The Daily Banner until she and Russell became School Bus Contractors for Dorchester County. She loved children, valued education, and drove a bus until she retired in 1996 due to glaucoma.\n \n\n Mildred cherished faith and community. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she had served as a Den Leader for Boy Scouts Cub Pack 752. She was a life member of Progressive of Dorchester Temple #224 I.B.P.O.E.W, and Cedar Meadows Rod & Gun Club Ladies Auxiliary. Until her health prevented her from doing so, Mildred was very active within Prince Hall Freemasonry. She served as Past Worthy Matron of Oziel Chapter #23, Order Eastern Star, P.H.A.; Past Loyal Lady Ruler of John H. Jones Jr. Assembly #284, Order of the Golden Circle, P.H.A.; and Past Illustrious Commandress of Abulahab Court #189, A.E.A.OM.S., P.H.A. She maintained her faith throughout life.\n \n\n On Tuesday May 17, 2016, Mildred M. Stewart peacefully made her transition to eternal life at Lorien Nursing Home Columbia. She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons and daughters-in-law – Russell Stewart, Jr. (Karen), Eugene O. Stewart (Bessie), Gregory D. Stewart (Diana); seven grandchildren – Jeffrey Poon, Daryl Stewart, Eugene Stewart Jr., Sherrice Smullens, Shawndre M. Stewart, and Breanna I. Stewart; eleven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and numerous grand, great-grand, and great-great-grand nieces and nephews.
