Frances Thomas

–

Cambridge, Maryland

The late Frances Elizabeth Gibson was born September 23, 1932 to the late Leroy Gibson and the late Pearl Virginia Benson – Gibson.

Surrounded by her family Frances Elizabeth Gibson - Thomas passed this life peacefully at 11:25 pm on Wednesday April 26, 2017 at the Eleanor A. Koons Hospice House in Easton Maryland.

She worked various jobs Merrimac Cleaners, Clothing Care, Star  Democrat Publishing, William Hill Manor, and the last place of employment before retirement The Children’s Shop.

Sydney J. Harris once said, “The best things you can give children, next to good habits, are good memories.”  Mom enjoyed her family and family events, and we enjoyed her.  We were so blessed to have spent our last  holiday with her, Easter Sunday.  No matter what the occasion, the occasion was always centered around her.  Mom was really the “rock” of this Gibson-Sherwood Family.  Whether we were cooking at home, out to dinner, having a picnic, or planning a celebration, she was in the background giving out orders.  She loved preparing for Gibson Family & Friends Day, she would say “whatever you gonna have food wise, just make sure you have plenty of it!”

One thing for sure, if Mom liked you, she liked you; but if not, you knew where you stood with her.  She never mixed words nor was she good at  hiding her feelings.  We would sometimes say, “Mom, don’t say that,” and she would respond “why? I already thought it!”

Not only did Mom enjoy her family but she had special moments with some of her really close and longtime friends.  Namely: Geraldine “Sasso” Wilmer, the late Virgie “Dot” Potter, the late Corine Blackwell, the late Rosalie Gale, the late Vivian Stanford, and the late Doris Blake, to name a few.

As her community commitment she was a Den Mother for the cub scouts  and a member of the Changing Age Club.  As her religious commitment she was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church Easton, Maryland.  Mother loved her church, she loved her pastor, and she loved her seat in the lower auditorium.  As if we don’t realize there is something about losing our mother that is permanent and inexpressible – it is a wound that will never quite heal; we will every Sunday remember her when we walk past the empty chair.  We will always remember how we would gather around the table at meal times to make sure her plate was fixed and she was satisfied.

Preceding her in death was her husband, the late Warren Dan Thomas; her children; James “Bunny” Sherwood, Elizabeth “Patsy” Sherwood, and her youngest son Warren “Troy” Gibson Sr.

Left behind to cherish her fondest memories are her natural children: Barbara Jean Sherwood – Hill, Cambridge Maryland; Andrew Robert Sherwood & Victoria, Greensboro Maryland; Lenda Danice Gibson Smith & Linwood, Trappe Maryland; Veda Lee Gibson, Easton Maryland; and Minister Craig S. Gibson, Cambridge , Maryland; Her brothers: Charles Gibson & Lucille, Elkins Park Pennsylvania;   Gerald Gibson & Ida, Easton Maryland;  Karyn Gibson, a granddaughter she raised as her own; Grandchildren;   Great Grandchildren; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family & friends.
