Davette Layton-Askins, 61, better known by her family as Betty, was born November 3, 1961 to the late William James Sr. & Georgia Lee Layton in Cambridge, MD. She went home to glory on September 2, 2023 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Easton MD. \n\nDavette was educated in the Dorchester County Public School System graduating from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Class of 1979. She also attended Warwick Community College graduating as a RN (Registered Nurse). She was employed at Eastern Shore Hospital Center for over 20 years, when her health failed in 2006. She was also employed with Hospice in Dorchester County. \n\nOn November 22, 1986, she married her best friend, the one she laughed with, lived for and dreamt of, Gregory Askins and from that union they had two children Gregory Jr. and Tenesha. \n\nDavette was an active member of the Prince Hall Masonic family. Her masonic affiliations included: Member of the Abu LaHab Court #189, Myra Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated, Jurisdictions of Maryland. Offices that she held are: District Deputy Grand Matron, Worthy Matron of Oziel Chapter No. 23 of District 4, Financial Secretary for Mary Jane Henry Chapter 54, Preston, Maryland. She volunteered with MidShore Meals Til Monday packaging, distributing food and backpacks for the Dorchester County Public Schools and Dorchester County Herschel Johnson Youth Basketball League/Police Athletic League. \n\nShe joined St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a faithful and active member. She loved to work the Sound Room and whatever else she was asked to do. Her favorite saying was, ‘Don’t talk about it, be about it’.\n\nHer hobbies are crocheting, babysitting everybody's children and cooking yeast rolls. She made lap blankets for nursing homes, Veterans, and Red Cross. \n\nProceeding her in death besides her parents are her brothers, William(Billy) Jr. and Bruce Layton, nephew Franklin Ausby, maternal grandparent Lena Strand, aunts, Alice Thompson, Minnie Godfrey, Thelma Hollis, mother-in-law Jeannette Askins, father-in-law Leon Askins Sr. \n\nShe leaves to cherish her fond memories, her husband, Gregory Askins Sr., ; children- Gregory Jr(Kortnie) and Tenesha; grandchildren- Jaylah Jones, Rondre Ball Jr. also known as Beanie; siblings-Lionel Layton(Katherine), Janice Boyd(Michael), and Velma Shipp; In-laws-Olga Layton, Leon Askins Jr(Katie), Charles Askins(Barbara), Darryl Askins(Laura), Sharon Warner(Norman), Irene Askins, Amy Askins(William), LaDonna Young and Annie Keene. Mother-n-law: Annie Askins. Special daughters-Tychera and Shavonte Foster, a special son-Ronald Beasley; special friends, Patricia Johnson Sharp, Frances Sharp, Sharlene Harris, and Glendola Bowen; and a host of amazing nieces, nephews, cousins that she loved dearly. \n\nIf anyone or anything was forgotten we apologize sincerely, please charge it to our head and not our hearts during this difficult time.
